Abstract

It is known that the language levels of vocational education students have been alarming. The aim of the current study was to gain insight into the attitudes of teachers regarding these worrying language levels in vocational education and if work experience plays a factor in this. Because of what is known in the literature, it was expected that experienced teachers would have a different attitude regarding education in relation to novice teachers. In this cross-sectional survey, 210 teachers have been invited to fill in the questionnaire. In total 57 teachers of Terra Groningen were participating in the study. The questionnaire used was based on the Dimensions of Attitude Towards Science instrument (DAS) by Van Aalderen-Smeets and Van der Molen (2013). The independent samples t-test showed non-significant differences in attitude on the subscale Relevance, (t (55) = 1.617; p = .112). This shows that there is not a meaningful difference between novice teachers and experienced teachers regarding the relevance of teaching the Dutch language. Teachers are convinced that the reading of specialist literature could lead to an improvement of the language skills of students. The conclusion is that novice teachers have a higher rate of enjoyment in teaching language, have less anxiety while teaching language, and have a higher rate of self-efficacy. But these conclusions should be carefully interpreted due to the non-significant outcomes of the independent samples t-test. The practical recommendations are to dedicate attention to stimulating reading for students to achieve in their future career. Future research is necessary to investigate the possible effects of work experience on the attitudes of teachers.
