Abstract

Child sexual abuse is an acute and global health problem. Although there is a relatively strong body of research that has explored the relationship between child sexual abuse and adverse mental health, there is relatively little research on the relationship between child sexual abuse and labour market participation. Furthermore, almost no research has addressed the potential moderating effect of the timing of the abuse. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate 1) how child sexual abuse affects labour market participation and 2) whether the onset of the abuse influences this association. This study uses fully anonymized (synthetic) data derived from the ongoing longitudinal cohort study TRAILS and a sample size of 1457 participants. To operationalise labour market participation, the NEET status was used, which was reported through the educational and employment status at age 22. The occurrence and the timing of sexual abuse were reported through the Traumatic Youth Questionnaire. A chi-square test was conducted for both hypotheses, the results of which were both non-significant with X2 (DF = 1, N = 1457) = 0.36, p = .546 for the first hypothesis and X2 (DF = 2, N = 1457) = 0.99, p = .609 for the second hypothesis. In sum, neither the connection between child sexual abuse and NEET status nor the moderating effect of the timing of the abuse could be proven. The study nonetheless contributes to the expansion of the body of literature and places the focus on implications for further research.
