Abstract
The present systematic review study investigated the cognitive distortions of antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and psychopathy in situations of interpersonal violence. For this purpose, the present study systematically reviewed 11 empirical studies investigating the psychopathological conditions of interest in relation to cognitive distortions/moral disengagement and interpersonal violence. Results of the present systematic review included that a) both self-serving and self-debasing cognitive distortions are predictors of interpersonal violence and narcissistic personality disorder, b) the primary cognitive distortions and moral disengagement strategies used include displacement and diffusion of responsibility, victim guilt attribution, minimisation of harm produced, and sexist distorted cognitions, and c) among the various types of IV, sexual violence is the type of criminal act in which perpetrators present the highest amount of self-serving cognitive distortions. In conclusion, cognitive distortions may be the central aspect of both psychopathological conditions and proclivities to engage in interpersonal violence. Additionally, cognitive distortions may be influenced by age and be sex-specific, and may have clinical and research implications.
