Abstract
In recent times, skepticism towards scientific facts has been on the rise, leading to an obscured demarcation between reality and misinformation. This study sought to elucidate these anti-scientific attitudes by employing a linear regression analysis on a nationally representative sample from the United States (N = 1500). We hypothesized that conservative political ideology and collective narcissism would be positively associated with anti-scientific attitudes, and that collective narcissism would moderate the relationship between political ideology and anti-scientific attitudes. Our findings confirmed a positive relationship between conservative political ideology and anti-scientific attitudes, as well as between collective narcissism and anti-scientific attitudes. However, no evidence was found to support the interaction of collective narcissism in the relationship between political ideology and anti-scientific attitudes. These results suggest that value rigidity and group self-image are central factors in understanding anti-scientific attitudes. Further research is needed to delve into the various dimensions of these constructs and employ improved measures and operationalizations.
