Abstract
Depression is a large global problem, not only for adults, but also for children and adolescents. A lot of research has been done on the cause and course of depression, but for a long time a lot of this research focused on adults. A number of theories have been developed about depression, in this study the focus will be on Beck’s cognitive theory, the hopelessness theory, and the response style theory. These theories have furthered the understanding of depression and helped develop interventions for depression. Beck’s cognitive theory, the hopelessness theory, and the response style theory are all diathesis-stress theories that describe how a cognitive vulnerability interacts with stress to cause depressive symptoms. A systematic review was done on the literature available on this topic from 2006 to 2023. After screening the articles that were found, there were 11 articles that fit all the selection criteria. From these articles data was extracted to determine the effect sizes to investigate whether they support the theories in youth samples. For Beck’s cognitive theory and the hopelessness theory there was very limited evidence supporting the theories. The evidence for the response style theory cautiously supports its legitimacy in youth samples. Since only a small number of articles were found testing these theories in a youth sample, future research is still needed, especially on the diathesis-stress aspect, as less than half of the articles investigated this important part of the theories.
