Abstract

Art can elicit different emotions and bodily sensations in children. The role of art engagement in these aesthetic emotions and the embodied art experience is still unclear. Art engagement might support the development from simple emotional reactions to more complex emotional understanding. This pilot study aims to assess if art engagement is associated with emotional and bodily experiences in reaction to artwork in children. A multi method design was used to gain information about art engagement, embodied emotions and the sense making of art across children from different ages. Participants (N = 12, Mage = 12, SD = 4.08, range 6 to 17 years old) recruited via convenience sample filled in a survey and participated conversation about their art item. Results found no associations between art engagement and bodily sensations. However, the intensity and arousal of an emotional response seems to be associated with art engagement as well as bodily sensations; χ2 = 5.50, df = 2, N = 89, Cramer’s V = 0.176 p = 0.064; χ2 = 0.90, df = 1, N = 89, Cramer’s V = 0.101 p = 0.342; χ2 = 0.09, df = 2, N = 77, Cramer’s V = 0.025 p = 0.952. Children’s sense-making to art showed a shift in with ageing; children under 10 years of age are more perceptual and imaginative orientated, which seems to develop into more use of conceptual and analytical strategies. A multimethod design to examine art experiences and aesthetic emotions seem valuable and would definitely be advised in future research.
