Abstract
Anxiety is a common phenomenon during development from child to adult. Social relationships can affect the degree of anxiety, but anxiety can also affect the quality and quantity of social relationships. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between attending a daycare center and the degree of anxiety symptoms among clinically diagnosed children between the ages of seven and twelve. The dataset from previous research by Van Doorn et al. (2017) was used. In this study, 88 children (65.9% girls, 34.1% boys) and mothers participated. The average age of the children was ten years. Of all the children who participated in this study, 26.5% attended a daycare center. The outcome of t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests was a significant relationship between attending a daycare center and the degree of separation anxiety. Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between attending a day care center and the other (sub)scales. The average number of hours in the week that the children spent in a daycare center was 17.61 hours. To investigate if there is a relationship between the number of hours in a week in a daycare center and the degree of separation anxiety symptoms, a Pearson's correlation test was performed. The Pearson's correlation test revealed that there was no significant correlation between the number of hours in a daycare and the degree of separation anxiety from the perspective of mother (r = .04; p = .866; N = 18) and child (r = .05; p = .84; N = 18). Importantly, it is not clear whether fear affects attending a daycare or attending a daycare affects fear. This will require more specific research on the reasons why children did not attend a daycare center and the experiences of the children who attend a daycare center.
