Abstract
The perception and the estimation of time are essential for humans’ everyday lives. Multiple models attempted to investigate how time is perceived and what are the elements that affect subjective time perception. In this study, we investigate the role of memorability of images on time perception. Memorability is the likelihood to remember a picture in a stream of multiple pictures, and it is defined as being intrinsic and as a high-level perceptual property of the picture. Therefore, we assumed that memorability is a stimulus property that has high attention and cognitive demand, thus possibly influencing how time is perceived. In this study, we analyzed the influence of different levels of memorability on subjective time perception. Moreover, we estimated the complexity of the images would have influenced the relationship. The experiment consisted in a bisection task where images were presented for a certain duration, and participants had to estimate the duration. For the experiment, we chose 154 images from the IAPS and LaMem databases. Image complexity was defined using JPEG compression size and a total of 50 undergraduate students participated in the study. A repeated measure ANOVA revealed that when more memorable images are presented time is overestimated as opposed to less memorable images. Moreover, complexity did not influence the relationship. The results of this study imply that memorability does have an effect on time perception. However, the comprehension of these mechanisms is still unclear, and future studies should investigate this relationship more in depth to better understand how time is perceived.
