A thesis is an aptitude test for students. The approval of the thesis is proof that the student has sufficient research and reporting skills to graduate but does not guarantee the quality of the research and the results of the research as such, and the thesis is therefore not necessarily suitable to be used as an academic source to refer to. If you would like to know more about the research discussed in this thesis and any publications based on it, to which you could refer, please contact the supervisor mentioned.
Abstract
Time perception is a crucial component of everyday life. However, it may be influenced by many factors. This paper will investigate the effect of image memorability on time perception. Secondarily, this study will investigate the effect of fear on time perception. The data of 50 participants was used in this study. The 154 images used in the experiment were selected from IAPS and LaMem image databases. A Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance was performed on the data. The results were non-significant, but there are trends to be seen in the data analysis. A trend was found suggesting that fearful images lead to an underestimation in time perception. This contradicts the hypothesis. The trend seen in for the effect of high memorability images was in line with the hypothesis, as the trend suggests that time perception of images with high memorability are overestimated in comparison with lower memorability images. This paper may be used as a foundational work for future research exploring the role and effect of fear and image memorability on time perception.
