Abstract
Job crafting is beginning to become a part of every employee’s daily life. One aspect of job crafting is approach job crafting; this is defined as taking on more challenging demands and tasks to improve one’s work. Thus far, in job crafting research, the individual perspective has been largely addressed. Taking this further, and drawing on relative deprivation theory, it is suggested that approach crafting co-workers may affect observing employees. This study suggests that a zero-sum mindset moderates the resulting increase in interpersonal conflict that is due to amplified feelings of relative deprivation. Quantitative data were collected from a convenience sample of N = 91 participants, conducted online in the Netherlands. Simple linear regression analysis revealed that the two research hypotheses were rejected. This study’s findings suggest that approach crafting is not associated with increasing interpersonal conflict with a colleague. A high zero-sum mindset, however, is positively associated with increased interpersonal conflict. This study thereby confirms previous discoveries on approach crafting and solidifies the boundary conditions regarding the dark side of approach crafting.
