Abstract
The present study sought to investigate how the organization of a Dutch university influences the well-being of students and staff´s through its support/thwarting of basic psychological needs. This was accomplished using a qualitative research design, the data consisting of semi-structured interviews with six students and six staff (n=12), who were asked to elaborate on their well-being process in academia. From participants interviews a multitude of organizational factors appear to impact their well-being, such as; workload, class sizes, organizational support, an extrinsically motivated learning process, top-down directives, teaching-research conflict, communication systems, etc.. We propose a model showing how the different factors influence the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs. In the discussion we position our findings within a critical analysis of the current organizational structure, suggesting how university politics may have serious impacts on staff´s and students well-being through the thwarting of the basic psychological needs. We conclude by calling for more research on this area as it appears to have important implications for well-being in academia. Key words: Organization, basic psychological needs (BPN), Self-determination theory (SDT), Neoliberalism, Well-being, Higher education (HE)
