Abstract
This research paper investigates the relationship between memorability and time perception, specifically focusing on the influence of sexual arousal. The study aims to deepen our understanding of time perception processes and the effects of sexual stimuli on cognition. We employ the Pacemaker-Accumulator Model to explain distortions in time perception, emphasizing the roles of arousal and attention. Our first hypothesis postulates that higher memorability of images leads to more overestimation of time, while lower memorability results in underestimation compared to highly memorable images. The second hypothesis posits that sexual arousal induces increased arousal and stronger overestimation of time, regardless of the memorability of control images. A within-design experiment was conducted with 50 recruited participants who engaged in a temporal bisection task. They classified durations of displayed sexual and control images as either long or short. The data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. The results revealed no significant main effects between the conditions, which could be due to many reasons, including a lack of power, a cumulative effect of the various displayed arousing conditions, gender differences, or the underestimated effect of valence in arousal. In summary, the non-significant findings of this study make it challenging to draw conclusive implications. Additional research is necessary to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between memorability, time perception, and sexual arousal. Keywords: sexual arousal, time perception, memorability, bisection task, images
