Abstract
In recent years, various problems have occurred in Dutch youth care, including waiting lists, high work pressure and a lack of expertise of youth care professionals. In addition there are concerns about the quality of care and the safety of children in youth care institutions (Inspectie Gezondheid en Jeugd et al., 2021). To tackle these problems, further professionalization of youth care is being looked at. Professionalization is a recurring topic in youth care and often seen as the solution for the existing problems (Dekker, 2016). After the second world war professionalization was seen as the needed solution for the lack of skills of the group leader in residential care (Dekker, 2016). The research question of this thesis is: “What did the discussion about professionalization look like in the pedagogical journals in the period from 1945 to 1960 when it comes to the group leader in residential help in youth care?” Articles from pedagogical journals were selected and analyzed using a self-made instrument. The results show that the discussion on the group leader in residential care was often concerning further training and tasks of the group leader. There was an uncertainty on what the tasks of the group leader should be and also on how the group leader should become more skilled in this work field.
