Abstract
Abstract Loneliness is a highly prevalent problem that has direct negative health consequences. Although a large body of literature has examined the risk factors for loneliness, research on effective interventions is limited. A recent study found secure base activation to reduce loneliness. In an attempt to replicate those findings and in view of the fact that secure attachment is associated with reduced loneliness, this experimental study investigated the effect of external and contextual secure base activation on loneliness. Further, the question for whom this might be so was investigated by testing the moderating role of introversion. Two manipulation conditions activated a secure base and an insecure base in participants (n=401), who also completed self-report measures to assess introversion before, and loneliness after. We found a significant main effect and thus the findings support previous findings, yet the results showed that there was no significant moderation effect of introversion. We conclude that not having a secure base contributes to loneliness and loneliness can be reduced by secure base activation, which can be applied in future loneliness interventions. Key words: Loneliness, Secure base activation, Introversion
