Abstract

The intersection of mindfulness meditation and psychedelic experiences is a rapidly developing area of research with significant implications not only for mental health but also for broadening our understanding of human potential. While existing research has demonstrated the safety and efficacy of psychedelics in clinical settings, there is still much to explore regarding their potential for enhancing well-being among non-clinical populations in recreational settings. Motivated by the possibility that psychedelics may offer benefits for psychologically healthy individuals, this thesis aims to address this research gap. Central to this work is the research question: Can practicing mindfulness meditation prior to a recreational psychedelic retreat enhance the subjective experience and increase safety, resulting in an augmented sense of well-being? While this thesis does not present actual study outcomes, its objective is to lay out the scientific basis, structure, and methodology of a study investigating this question and to critically discuss the rationale behind the chosen design—ranging from the specific techniques of mindfulness practice to the environmental considerations of a psychedelic retreat. Limitations that arise due to the study design are also delineated. Ultimately, this comprehensive examination of the study aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in this field and inform the development of future studies investigating the intersection of psychedelic experiences and mindfulness-based interventions.
