Abstract

This study systematically summarized evidence of studies (published between 2013-2015) examining performance on neuropsychological tests after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in a general population. mTBI is a common neurological disorder, but it is unknown to what extent performance on neuropsychological tests after mTBI varies by phase of recovery and by cognitive domain. Therefore, the aim of the current systematic review was to provide a comprehensive overview of findings from 2013-2015 across the acute, subacute, and chronic phases of recovery after mTBI. PubMed and PsycINFO were systematically searched until January 26th, 2023. A total of 15 studies were included. Included studies’ characteristics and findings were tabulated to facilitate data synthesis. Methodological quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Some evidence for lowered performance, as compared to control groups, in the domains of memory and attention (including processing speed) was found in both the acute and subacute phase. The included studies did not permit firm conclusions about neuropsychological test performance in the chronic stage after mTBI. This systematic review provides a strong basis for a more comprehensive framework that can be used to evaluate cognitive functioning after mTBI, contributing to personalized treatment for mTBI patients in clinical practice.
