Abstract

The relationship between movement and music has been has been widely studied, yet singing improvisation in the context of flow, self-efficacy and movement has not been thoroughly examined. The Kine-Musical Performance (KiMuPe) approach developed by Nijs (2023) focuses on the musician-instrument relationship, includes flow and improvisation and inspired the development of the workshops in this paper. This study, which is explorative in nature, aims to investigate how a movement-based intervention affects flow and self-efficacy from pre- to post-workshop through the assignment of participants to either a movement or a non- movement group. Additionally, participants’ singing improvisation was investigated to determine whether a movement-based intervention elicits higher flow and self-efficacy than a non-movement-based intervention. Furthermore, whether a change in self-efficacy is positively related to a change in flow was assessed. There was a significant increase in flow within the movement group and compared to the non-movement group. In contrast, flow did not lead to a significant increase in the non-movement group. Moreover, self-efficacy showed no significant change between-, within groups or with regards to flow. These results suggest that participating in a movement-based intervention can increase one’s experience of flow, particularly during singing improvisation. To draw more sophisticated conclusions, future studies should not only replicate this study whilst accounting for its limitations but also further build on the workshops presented while extending their applicability to different contexts.
