Abstract
With the increasing popularity of music embodiment research, this study is the first one to explore the potential impact of movement-based workshops on enhancing musical creativity among singers during improvisation. The findings of this research contribute to understanding the potential benefits of incorporating movement in musical training for fostering creative expression. This study included 10 singers divided into a non-movement group and a movement group which received three improvisation workshops. Participants submitted improvisation videos before and after attending the workshops, which were later assessed regarding their creativity based on an adapted version of the Generic Micro-Developmental Coding Framework of Creativity by Kupers et al. (2018), including a new dimension that entails the use of words in improvisations. The findings showed a slight mean increase in creativity from the pre-test to the post-test in both groups. Nevertheless, these findings were not statistically significant. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding their creativity. Thus, all three hypotheses were rejected. Therefore, these findings do not align with previous research, challenging the effectiveness of movement-based exercises and the regular practice of improvising on creativity. Nevertheless, the study’s limitations ask for further research to investigate the complex interplay between embodiment, creativity, improvisation, and music.
