A thesis is an aptitude test for students. The approval of the thesis is proof that the student has sufficient research and reporting skills to graduate but does not guarantee the quality of the research and the results of the research as such, and the thesis is therefore not necessarily suitable to be used as an academic source to refer to. If you would like to know more about the research discussed in this thesis and any publications based on it, to which you could refer, please contact the supervisor mentioned.
Abstract
Keywords: Mastocytosis, Cognitive Complaints, Emotional Distress, Fatigue, Coping Cognitive complaints are reported to co-occur with Mastocytosis, a disease characterized by clonal proliferation of abnormal mast cells. Whether these cognitive complaints can be linked to the disease directly or may rather be attributed to psychological factors (emotional distress, fatigue and coping) is currently unknown. This study investigated neuropsychological symptoms in mastocytosis, using self-report data and physiological markers, to gain more insight in possible associations with, and predictors of, cognitive complaints, mental and physical fatigue in Mastocytosis. The sample consisted of 234 subjects with Mastocytosis, consulted via the University Medical Centre Groningen. Significant predictors of cognitive complaints were depression, fatigue and passive coping. Symptoms and sBT could not predict cognitive complaints in mastocytosis. Variation in mental and physical fatigue was accounted for by mastocytosis symptoms, depression and avoidant coping. Findings indicate that depression, mental fatigue and passive coping may play a particularly crucial role in subjective cognitive functioning. Fatigue in mastocytosis may be a symptom of depression as well as a consequence of mast cell burden directly.
