Abstract

According to the United Nations General assembly, obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths globally. Possible risk factors associated with weight gain and obesity for both children and adults include Eating in the Absence of Hunger (EAH-C) and low levels of Self-control. Previous research has also shown that lack of perceived sense of Meaning in Life (MiL) may contribute to the development and refractoriness of eating disorders. In the current study MiL is conceptualized with the Meaning in Life-Questionnaire (MLQ) and divided into two subscales Presence (the extent to which someone pursues intrinsically valued goals and meaningful experiences) and Search (the extent to which someone actively searches for MiL). The current cross-sectional study tests whether Presence has a negative relationship with EAH-C and BMI (H1). It also tests whether Search has a positive relationship with EAH-C and BMI (H2) and whether these relationships are mediated by Self-control (H3). The adult participants (N=456) were recruited and tested via the Prolific platform. BMI was not associated with Presence or Search. However, the other results were in line with the hypotheses, though small effects have been found. Presence had a negative relationship with EAH-C, Search had a positive relationship with EAH-C. The relationship between Presence and EAH-C was fully mediated by Self-control. The relationship between Search and EAH-C was partially mediated by Self-control. These findings suggest that low levels of Presence, via low levels of Self-control coincide with high levels of overeating (based on the proxy EAH-C).
