Abstract
Differences in accessibility of higher education and attainment persist for many groups, particularly those from diverse sociocultural backgrounds, such as individuals from low social-class backgrounds, ethnic/racial minorities, and first-generation student status. The concepts of cultural congruity, cultural mismatch, and identity incompatibility describe the perceived misalignment experienced by students from diverse sociocultural backgrounds in relation to the majority culture prevalent in higher education institutions. This master’s thesis combines a systematic literature review comparing the bodies of literature on three constructs (cultural congruity, cultural mismatch, and identity incompatibility), with a quantitative study analyzing data on first-year university students at the University of Groningen. Examination of the measures and underlying theories of each construct demonstrate that cultural mismatch and cultural congruity can both be conceptualized as subconstructs of identity incompatibility. Results from the quantitative analysis lend support to previous findings. The findings of this thesis demonstrate the necessity for new research approaches with the intention of informing interventions.
