Abstract

This research focuses on the issue of second career teacher attrition, particularly in secondary education. The issue has been reported to be particularly impactful on the educational system of French-speaking Belgium. After exploring this topic and noting (recent) findings that point to factors of potential interest in combating attrition, the following research question arose: What is the relationship between group-focused transformational leadership and attrition rates of second career teachers in French-speaking Belgium, through its influence on professional collegial support? A cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Groningen using data collected by 533 teachers in French-speaking Belgium to determine the nature of the relationship between group-focused leadership, professional collegial support, and attrition rates of second career teachers. Findings indicate that there is no direct relationship between leadership that employs transformational traits and second career teacher attrition in French- speaking Belgium secondary schools. It is primarily through this form of leadership’s relationship with job satisfaction that it might have a relationship with teacher attrition– and alternatively, teacher retention. Further research should prioritize exploring the role of different factors relating to job satisfaction (e.g., a teacher’s relationship with school leaders) in leadership and collegial interactions’ suggested relationships with teacher retention. The research could also focus on exploring what role if any, individual-focused school leadership plays in the relationships that were tested in this study.
