Abstract

This study explored whether the relationship between childhood maltreatment and sexual victimization in women is mediated by attachment styles and risky sexual behavior. The study was a part of a larger longitudinal study. However, the cross-sectional data was used for the purpose of this study. The measurements used consisted of multiple questionnaires, including the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, the Experience in Close Relationship-Revised Scale, the Risky Sex Scale and the Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire. Participants were (N = 2154) female first-year psychology students from five universities in the Netherlands and one university in New Zealand. Findings showed that childhood maltreatment severity is associated with adult sexual abuse. Childhood maltreatment was significantly associated with insecure attachment style, and insecure attachment was significantly positively associated with risky sexual behavior. The relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult sexual abuse was not found to be significanty mediated by risky sexual behavior or insecure attachment. Keywords: childhood maltreatment, sexual victimization in adulthood, risky sexual behavior, insecure attachment
