Abstract

Speaking more than one language is a skill that has been widely celebrated. Schools in the Netherlands have been offering bilingual education and Dutch people are applauded for their English proficiency. However, multilingualism as diversity in a classroom receives different attention, and having a different home language is sometimes seen as a root for educational problems. It is unclear why there are different attitudes towards various forms of bi- or multilingualism. In this thesis, eight in-depth semi-structured interviews are conducted with primary school teachers from different parts of the Netherlands. Their experiences with multilingual students in their classroom are analysed in order to understand why these attitudes differ. The interviews show that individual cases of multilingual students vary greatly, and are usually intersecting with numerous factors in these students’ lives.
