A thesis is an aptitude test for students. The approval of the thesis is proof that the student has sufficient research and reporting skills to graduate but does not guarantee the quality of the research and the results of the research as such, and the thesis is therefore not necessarily suitable to be used as an academic source to refer to. If you would like to know more about the research discussed in this thesis and any publications based on it, to which you could refer, please contact the supervisor mentioned.
Abstract
Most humans seem to prioritize self-transcendent above self-enhancement values. Since these values will be in danger because of climate change you would expect people to take the necessary pro-environmental action. Unfortunately, this is not sufficiently the case, often due to situational constraints and barriers within everyday society. People don’t consider their mostly prioritized values or suppress them due to value-conflicts. This research aims to examine what would happen if these barriers would disappear. Would people than be motivated to act on their strongly prioritized values? A total of 79 respondents participated in the research. We created a setting were the situational constraints and barriers within everyday society were eliminated. People created a country without existing systems which they could create themselves from ground up: their Youtopia. The Youtopia-tool existed out of an one hour interview and drawing of their Youtopia. Before and after the interview the respondents participated in a value questionnaire and measured their behavioral effect afterwards. As results, we found that indeed self-transcendent values were prioritized. Secondly, we found evidence that the Youtopia-tool was related to people their values, we did not find a strong relation. Finally, the results show that creating your Youtopia can motivate people to act in line with their prioritized values. Since people mostly prioritize self- transcendent values people would act more pro-environmental.
