Abstract
Problem Definition: It is well-documented in the literature that people with deafblindness are affected in their ability to access information, communicate and mobilise (NHS, 2022). However, the nature of the mobility problems has not been widely explored. Research question: Which areas of motor skill/movement/mobility (at any level of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health; World Health Organization, 2001) are most frequently recorded in the literature as being problematic for persons with deafblindness? Methodology: Literature used in the systematic review by Paramasivam et al. (2023) was examined for mobility information, which was then extracted and linked to the ICF (WHO, 2001). The range and impact of mobility issues were further examined by qualitative content analysis of the same data. Outcome measures were examined using descriptive statistics and difficulties coding mobility information according to the ICF were highlighted. Results: The literature demonstrated an extensive and varied impact on the mobility of people with deafblindness. Linking mobility issues with the ICF found that most categories used were from the activities and participation component, followed by environmental factors. Qualitative content analysis uniquely highlighted safety issues, among others. A scarcity of relevant outcome measures documented in the literature and important concepts not covered by the ICF, including mobilising in familiar/unfamiliar areas, were evident. Conclusion: Supporting the mobility of an individual with deafblindness should be addressed in all evaluations and support services provided to this cohort.
