Abstract
This thesis investigates the predictive validity of the psychology master’s admissions test procedure that was used to select students in the year 2021 at the University of Groningen. Specifically, it is studied to what extent the assessment tools and decision-making processes used are associated with the performance of the students later in their master’s program. The selection test consisted of a general psychology knowledge test for all students and additional domain-specific knowledge tests for the applicants to the clinical- and the clinical neuropsychology-oriented tracks. The scores on the tests were used to categorize the students into high- and low-scoring groups and students were selected via a lottery first from the high- scoring group and if places remained open after that from the low-scoring group. The findings imply that the general test scores were able to predict the GPA of the 244 students in the sample to some extent. The additional clinical knowledge test did not add to the predictive accuracy of the test scores. The clinical neuropsychology test, however, showed incremental validity when added to the general test. The categorization into low- and high-scoring applicants resulted in an average GPA 0.24 points higher in the high-scoring group compared to the low-scoring group, which was not a statistically significant difference.
