A thesis is an aptitude test for students. The approval of the thesis is proof that the student has sufficient research and reporting skills to graduate but does not guarantee the quality of the research and the results of the research as such, and the thesis is therefore not necessarily suitable to be used as an academic source to refer to. Abstract
Objective This research paper analyzes the complex relationship between cannabis use and the development of psychosis while also considering the cultural and legal contexts of two different populations: the Dutch and the Greek. It considers the cultural and legal factors influencing this relationship and addresses the growing prevalence of cannabis consumption, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of its potential implications for mental health. Methods The study involved 111 participants and were examined through two self-report questionnaires enabling the investigation of differences in cannabis use prevalence and the presence of psychotic symptoms. Also, the study wanted to assess the vulnerability of Greek cannabis users to positive symptoms such as persecutory thinking, in comparison to their Dutch counterparts. Results The findings indicate a statistically significant association between cannabis use and the presence of psychotic symptoms within the general population. Additionally, the study reveals that Greek users exhibit higher levels of consumption, although not statistically significance, and a potential increased susceptibility to positive symptoms such as persecutory thinking when compared to Dutch counterparts. These differences may be influenced by economic disparities, cultural attitudes, and legal frameworks. Conclusion This study findings underscores the need for additional research to explore the interplay between socio- economic and cultural factors concerning cannabis use and its implication for mental health. Caution is warranted due to the limited sample size. Keywords: Cannabis use, development of Psychosis, cultural contexts, legal contexts, prevalence of cannabis consumption, mental health implications
