Abstract

Transphobia harms transgender individuals and this necessitates further study to understand contributing factors. Previous research links traditional masculinity and manipulation of gender norms to heightened homophobia in straight men, and traditional masculinity and masculinity threat are associated with transphobia in straight men. Gay men, although influenced by traditional masculinity, tend to exhibit lower levels of transphobia compared to straight men. Therefore, the present thesis evaluates how the endorsement of traditional masculinity and the manipulation of gender norms affect attitudes among gay men towards transgender people in the United States. A total of 144 gay men in the United States were given a questionnaire to indicate their endorsement of masculinity and were randomly assigned to one of the gender norm manipulations (men’s feminisation vs. traditional masculinity). Last, their attitudes towards transgender people were measured. The results indicated that a stronger endorsement of masculinity correlated with more negative views towards transgender people. However, there was no effect of the gender norm manipulation on attitudes towards transgender people and no interaction effect could be found. This indicates that endorsement of masculinity is an important factor in understanding transphobia and should be considered when addressing prejudice and discrimination. Gender norms seem to have a different effect on gay men when compared to straight men, implying that gay men’s transphobia might be influenced differently.
