Abstract

The present thesis focuses on cis gay men in the United States of America while examining their endorsement of traditional masculinity and exposing them either to information indicating that gender norms about men are changing (i.e., perceived men’s feminization) or to information indicating that gender norms about men are remaining stable (i.e., traditional masculinity). Their attitudes toward transgender individuals where measured thereafter. In line with prior research that focused on heterosexual men’s attitudes toward gay men and homosexuality, the present thesis (n = 144) found that cis gay men who endorse traditional masculinity to a greater extent show more negative attitudes toward transgender individuals. In other words, the more cis gay men endorse traditional masculinity, the more negative attitudes they have toward transgender people. However, participants did not show any significant differences in their attitudes toward transgender people when exposed to perceived men’s feminization condition in comparison to the traditional masculinity condition. Also, the predicted interaction between the level of endorsement of traditional masculinity and perceived men’s feminization was not significant. Both these findings contradict prior research findings concerning heterosexual men’s attitudes toward gay men and homosexuality. Several recommendations for future research are discussed.
