Abstract

The purpose of this research is to gain insight into what influences the daily work location decision in the hybrid work context. Drawing from the theory of Task-Environment fit, we focus on the influence of the home-office set-up and interactive work tasks in predicting the daily telework intensity. We examined whether the quality of the home-office set-up positively predicts telework intensity (H1), and whether the anticipated amount of interactive work tasks has a buffering on this relationship (H2). Using aggregated data from a daily diary study with 40 hybrid workers, we conducted a multiple linear regression with interaction. We found support for H1 in that the quality of the home-office set-up positively predicted telework intensity in our study. However, we did not find support for a moderating effect of interactive work tasks (H2). The findings imply, among other, that the quality of the home- office space should be taken into consideration when planning on working effectively from home. This research contributes to existing literature on hybrid work regarding the influence of the physical work environment at home. Keywords: hybrid work, telework, telework intensity, home-office set-up, interactive tasks, Task-Environment fit
