Abstract

This article examines the potential mediating role hyperfocus has in the relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance, while additionally exploring the potential predictive role both academic intrinsic motivation and hyperfocus have on academic performance. Since prior research suggests intrinsic motivation to be positively associated with academic performance, the same was expected in this study. Even though there hasn’t been found any such research on the relationship between hyperfocus and academic performance, based on characteristics of hyperfocus it was still predicted to be positively associated with academic performance. Lastly based on the prior predictions, hyperfocus was expected to fulfil a mediating role between the other two constructs. To investigate these hypotheses, data from 517 psychology students at the University of Groningen were analysed in a cross-sectional research design, using regression analyses and a mediation analysis, the latter of which utilized the PROCESS macro. Support was found for both the hypotheses related to intrinsic motivation predicting hyperfocus and academic performance, the first of which is a completely novel finding. The hypotheses regarding hyperfocus predicting academic performance and hyperfocus fulfilling a mediating role between intrinsic motivation and academic performance were not supported by the found results. This could be due to one of multiple limitations of this study, the main one being the way in which hyperfocus is measured. This study only took into account the frequency of hyperfocus occurrences, while the presence of hyperfocus during the measurement of academic performance was not considered. To address these and other limitations, future research should delve deeper into ways of accurately measuring hyperfocus. Keywords: Hyperfocus, Intrinsic Motivation, Academic Performance
