Abstract

In this research we studied the presence and consequences of polarization in discussions. We studied the relationship between polarization and negative emotions, between polarization and knowledge and between knowledge and negative emtions. Our experiment was different from previous research, as it consisted between actual conversations between participants. Our most important results are that higher polarization levels do not indicate higher levels of negative emotions, but that discussing with someone of a different opinion group does and that both actual knowledge and perceived knowledge predict polarization levels.
