Abstract
Pride is an emotion that signifies self-worth and self-esteem, playing a major role in shaping attitudes and social interactions. In this research, we aimed to examine the influence of two facets of pride on tolerance, with empathy and self-focus as mediators. Although much research was done on the topic of pride, the amount of studies examining the influence of different forms of pride on empathy and tolerance is scarce. We conducted an experiment in which we manipulated authentic and hubristic pride (N= 273). We hypothesized the participants in the hubristic pride condition would show less empathy and tolerance than those in the control condition. Conversely we predicted that participants in the authentic pride condition would show more empathy and tolerance than the control condition. Lastly, we tested whether the relationship between both prides was mediated by empathy and explorative self-focus. Even though we successfully manipulated different forms of pride, none of the hypotheses were supported by the findings as levels of empathy and tolerance in the pride conditions did not differ from the control condition. Moreover, explorative analyses revealed that in both pride conditions participants were both more self and other-focused than in the control condition. Implications of these findings are discussed.
