Abstract
This research examined whether hyperfocus (HF) has a mediating effect on the positive relationship between intrinsic motivation (IM) and academic performance (AP). It is unclear how IM leads to better AP. HF is induced by task engagement, which we hypothesize is associated with IM. HF was proposed to enhance performance. Consequently, this study investigates if HF also enhances AP. Therefore, we hypothesized that HF could be a mediator in the positive relationship between IM and AP. This is important to test because HF interventions can be made if we know that HF enhances AP. Bachelor psychology students completed two questionnaires, the Academic Motivation Scale and School Hyperfocus subscale. Access to Grade Point Average was used as our measure for AP. We used regression analysis to test these associations. Lastly, a mediation analysis was done to test for the possible mediating effect of HF in the relationship between IM and AP. We concluded that there is indeed a positive relationship between IM and AP as well as between IM and HF. However, HF was not associated with AP and HF was not found to be a mediator in the IM-AP relationship. This study shows novel evidence that IM is positively associated with HF, which was suggested by researchers on this topic but never tested. On the other hand, HF might not enhance performance in the educational setting, while enhanced performance is an HF characteristic.
