Abstract

Considerable research has been done on the various factors that contribute to the stress and overload of organisations, work events and work environment on employees and their well-being. The current study aims to contribute to existing literature by assessing the negative effect of negative events on self-esteem. In addition, the moderating effect of neuroticism on the relationship is assessed. The foundational theories implemented to understand the mechanism of the variables used are conservation of resources theory (COR), job demands-resources model (JD-R) for the main effect variables and trait-state-interaction model for the moderating variable. The study was conducted using a multi-level design and regression analysis with a sample size of 141 resulting in non-supportive findings for both hypotheses. Hence, future research can focus on improvements such as the method of sample collection, a multi-level analysis, exploring different combinations of variables that are applicable to an organisational context or focus more on organisational based self-esteem.
