Abstract

There is a shifting understanding of men and masculinities, with emerging stereotypes that challenge traditional masculinity norms. Hereby, the rising of new concepts of masculinity, such as new masculinities. Research shows that men who embrace traditional masculinity norms was a strong predictor of using violence towards women. Distinct societal perceptions emerge when comparing new and traditional masculinities in terms of, warmth, competence and social distance. However, limited research exists on society’s perception of new masculinities. The aim of this research was to examine society’s perception of new masculinities and traditional masculinities in relation to intimate partner violence, warmth, competence and social distance. We conducted an experimental study (N = 319), in which the traditional masculinity prototype is compared to the new masculinity prototype. Results of this study showed that the participants perceived the new masculinity prototype differently than the traditional masculinity type. Namely, the new masculinity prototype is perceived as less likely to display IPV, warmer and desiring less social distance compared to the traditional masculinity type. Competence, however, showed no significant difference between the two masculinity prototypes. This research sheds light on how society views different kinds of masculinities, with an emphasis on new masculinities. To gain more insight on society’s perception on new masculinities, more research is needed. Keywords: traditional masculinities, new masculinities, intimate partner violence, societal perspective, warmth, competence, social distance
