Abstract
In this period of time, there is a rise in new masculinities opposing the ideas and values of traditional masculinity. These masculinities differ in real-life behaviours and the perception of certain general or specific behaviours, such as intimate partner violence, warmth, competence, and social distance. In this research we investigated the difference in perceptions between traditional masculinity and new masculinity, and we hypothesized that new masculine men are perceived as less likely to engage in intimate partner violence. Moreover, we expected that new masculine men are perceived as warmer, yet less competent as traditional masculine men. Lastly, we supposed that people would prefer to be in a closer social proximity with new masculine men in comparison with traditional masculine men. Our research explored this difference in perceptions through an experimental design (N = 316) contrasting traditional and new masculinity prototypes on general and specific behaviours. The results were analysed according to the relevant statistical inference, and largely aligned with our hypotheses, except for competence. Notably, new masculine men were perceived as equally competent in contrary to our expectations. This study provides a novel perspective regarding perceptions of behaviour, and adds to the existing literature of the differences between traditional masculinity and new masculinity.
