Abstract
By making pro-environmental choices, individuals can limit the greenhouse effect and climate change. We want people to make many pro-environmental choices, as this will have the biggest impact. Spillover is the extent to which engaging in one behaviour influences the likelihood of engaging in a second behaviour. Research that found evidence for a positive spillover effect has focused on individual behaviour. However, human behaviour is also influenced by people around us. Therefore, we investigated whether groups influence the spillover effect with the following question: ‘Is individual past pro-environmental behaviour or past (in)group pro-environmental behaviour more influential on intentions to behave pro-environmental in the future?’
