Abstract
Global warming and climate change pose an imminent threat. As individual behaviour can have a significant impact when it comes to mitigating the consequences of climate change, recognising and understanding when people act pro-environmentally is of great importance. Previous research on spillover theory has suggested that engagement in a first pro-environmental behaviour can represent an antecedent of subsequent pro-environmental behaviours (positive spillover). We suggest that an alternative explanation may prove useful in explaining engagement in multiple pro-environmental behaviours. The aim of the present study is thus, to investigate whether intrinsic pro-environmental motivation can act as an antecedent of different pro-environmental behaviours, specifically, circular economy behaviours. We conducted an online survey to investigate how pro-environmental motivation, past circular behaviour and circular economy intentions are related. We found that (1) pro-environmental motivation was positively associated with past circular behaviours, (2) pro-environmental motivation was not associated with circular economy intentions, (3) past circular behaviour was positively associated with circular economy intentions, (4) the relationship between past circular behaviour and circular economy intentions was not explained by pro-environmental motivation.
