Abstract
Research in identity development continues to expand, as there is continued recognition of the significance of commitment processes in shaping individuals’ lives. Commitment utility is a new concept in identity research indicating how useful a commitment is in guiding everyday life and behavior. Previous literature is limited to one study, suggesting that overarching commitments may offer greater utility than domain-specific commitments. To contribute to this new concept, we aimed to investigate whether overarching commitments are indeed higher in utility than domain-specific commitments. We conducted a repeated measures ANOVA (N = 91) where we manipulated the identity domains dating, education, flexible, and the overarching domain, and subsequently measured commitment utility. Results of the study are contrary to previous research, showing that overarching commitments did not exhibit higher commitment utility than domain-specific commitments, challenging existing literature. This paper highlights the importance of promoting identity integration across multiple domains for a holistic development of identity. Keywords: commitment utility; identity; integration; overarching commitments
