Abstract

Gender differences have fascinated researchers for many years across different disciplines. One such difference of interest is in gesture usage. Previous research argued that women use more gestures than men. Previous research also showed that gestures are of importance in problem solving, but that abstract strategies result in faster problem solving. In the current study, bachelor students took part in an experiment involving six sets of gear problems. The experiments were recorded, and the strategies were coded similarly to Alibali et al.’s (2011) study to analyse strategy choice and problem-solving speed. This study aimed to discover a relationship between gender and strategy choice, and whether the usage of the parity strategy influences gear problem solving speed, moderated by gender. Conducting an experiment (N = 34), results showed that using the parity strategy led to faster problem-solving, consistent with expectations. There were no gender differences in problem solving speed and there was no relationship between gender and strategy choice, contrary to predictions. Additionally, gender did not moderate the relationship between strategy choice and solving speed, which was unexpected. Our findings suggest there are no gender disparities in problem solving abilities, but indicate variations in problem solving speed based on strategy. Having discovered this, gender differences can be further minimised and future research on this topic can help tailor educational systems to improve methods for problem solving.
