Abstract
The focus on commitments strengths in specific identity domains and its relationship with well-being is often studied. However, a crucial part in the relationship between identity and well-being is the coherence of identity throughout domains. This cross-sectional study explores the relationship between identity commitments and well-being in emerging adulthood, focusing on overarching and domain-specific commitments. Drawing on a sample of 90 first-year psychology students the findings reveal that stronger commitments in both the overarching and education domains are associated with higher well-being, while commitments in the dating domain are not associated with well-being. The overarching domain surpasses specific domains in predicting well-being, highlighting the central role of having a strong overarching commitment. The study extends theoretical frameworks, emphasizing the interconnectedness of overarching identity commitments and well-being during emerging adulthood. Practical implications suggest tailored interventions promoting coherence in overarching identity for enhanced well-being in emerging adulthood. The study contributes insights for future research on identity commitments and well-being across diverse populations. Keywords: well-being, identity, commitment, overarching commitment, emerging adulthood
