Abstract

While callous-unemotional (CU) traits and proactive aggression often correlate significantly, hypotheses suggest that parental warmth may have a stronger association with CU traits, while parental harshness may be more closely linked to proactive aggression. However, there has been no systematic review of these associations to date. This review examines evidence on the effects of parental warmth and coercion, on both callous-unemotional traits and proactive aggression, offering a concise summary of the associations between these constructs. Through the examination of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, evidence was gathered. For the writing of the systematic review, the PRISMA guideline was used. The results suggest that parenting is associated with the development of CU traits and proactive aggression in children. Parental warmth was consistently found to be negatively associated with CU traits, whereas parental coercion was associated with both CU traits and proactive aggression across studies. The onset and development of CU traits and proactive aggression appear to be associated with the type of parenting adopted by parents.
