Abstract
The connection with nature is influenced by the direct interaction with nature during childhood. The experiences in nature during childhood lay a foundation for adulthood, which results in more sustainable behaviour in the future. This literature study looks at the influence of green schoolyards on the development of nature values in children and the conditions for a schoolyard to establish this development. Greening schoolyards refers to several changes in the schoolyard to bring nature back into the schoolyard, with the aim of improving the quality of children's learning experiences and play behaviour. One of the conclusions is that green schoolyards can contribute to the development of the connection with nature through the time spent on the schoolyard and the care for nature. A condition for this is that children do appreciate the schoolyard and the kind of experiences that children can have in the green schoolyard play a role in process. These experiences can be divided into peak experiences, flow experiences and magical moments. Which contribute to the challenging character of green schoolyards which stimulate the connection with nature in children. The more time is spent on the green schoolyard, where positive experiences are gained, the better the connection with nature will develop. To help this connection with nature develop in children of all ages in primary education, further research on the age cohorts in green schoolyards are important. Which should focus on the possibility of separated areas for different age cohorts or that different age cohorts use the green schoolyard at different times. Keywords: connection with nature, nature values, sustainable behaviour, green schoolyard, children in primary education
