Abstract

Academic motivation is a known predictor for academic performance, and flow experience is associated with academic motivation. This study examines the relationships between motivational constructs derived from the self-determination theory (STD), flow experience in academic activity and academic performance. The sample consists of 742 psychology students from the university of Groningen, who were measured with the academic motivation scale (AMS) to determine levels of academic motivation, the short dispositional flow scale (DFS-2) to define the amount of flow students experience during academic activities and their grade point average (GPA). The study is correlational, and the population is represented by a convenience sample. The results of the analysis displayed positive associations in the population between intrinsic motivation (IM) and GPA, flow and GPA and IM and flow. On the contrary, extrinsic motivation (EM) exhibited no association with flow and GPA, although more self-determined components from EM, introjected and identified extrinsic motivation, are positively related to flow. Furthermore there are some demographic differences in the population, with supportive evidence for gender differences in flow experience, and also in GPA for working students and non-working students. We used a mediation analysis to establish flow as a mediating variable between intrinsic motivation and GPA, and found a partial effect accounting for 34%. Future research is necessary to determine the direction of the effects of IM, flow and GPA, as well to find other mediators and practical implications of the flow construct in combination with STD and academic performance.
