Abstract
Literature on goal focus has demonstrated that focusing on the process, instead of the outcome, is more beneficial with respect to successful goal pursuit. However, there is only a small body of literature that has focused on the moderating effect goal difficulty in this context. In the present experimental study, it was predicted that for participants that chose a relatively hard goal, process focus would result in a more successful goal pursuit, whereas for participants that chose a relatively easy goal, outcome focus would result in more successful goal pursuit. In this two-part online Qualtrics study, we gathered the participants (N = 60) via different social media platforms and via a platform for first-year students (participating for course credit). In this study, a between-subjects design was utilized where we manipulated goal focus (process versus outcome focus). Inconsistent with our prediction, the results indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that goal difficulty moderated the relationship between goal focus and successful goal pursuit, t(59) = .59, p = .56. However, in the explorative analysis a marginally significant main effect for the manipulation was found, t(59) = 1.41, p = .16. Which might indicate that participants adopting an outcome focus are more successful in pursuing their goal. This research is part of a growing body of literature on the role of goal focus in successful goal pursuit. The new insights of this study may contribute to future research on similar topics. Keywords: goal focus, successful goal pursuit, goal difficulty
