Abstract

This paper set out to investigate the relationship between leader legitimacy and employee performance, and what mediating role trust may or may not play in this. This was done via a dyadic study conducted through questionnaires given to both leader and subordinate in a working context. Although the paper is written in English, this study was conducted through the Dutch language, with the sample being gathered mainly through the contacts of the collaborators of the project, as well as snowball sampling from this point. The sample came from a variety of industries and working contexts within the Netherlands, as a Dutch working context was the focus of this study. A regression analysis was carried out in order to analyse the data, and significant support was found for a full mediation of trust on the legitimacy performance relationship. Without devaluing the role of legitimacy, this result helps solidify trust’s place in the literature, but also points towards its key role when it comes to employee performance in a practical sense.
