Abstract

Care-experienced youth are less likely to complete a degree in higher education than those without experience in youth care (Ambrose et al., 2021). This is reflected in statistics from the CBS: 0.3% of care-experienced youth up to the age of 23 years old have completed higher education, compared to 8.8% of those without a youth care background (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, 2023). Young people exiting the youth care system are at a greater risk of educational deficits, potentially leaving them less well-prepared for university compared to students without experience in youth care (Morton, 2017). Therefore, the following research question was researched: What specific forms of additional support can universities offer to improve the transition to higher education for new students with a youth care background based on scientific literature? A scoping review was conducted. The challenges identified as possible causes of this high dropout rate were divided in themes: personal and academic challenges. The personal challenges who were found, include: lack of stability, financial problems, emotional and mental health issues, a greater risk of a limited network and a smaller sense of belonging. The academic challenges that were found, were: potential lack of academic preparedness and difficulty navigating bureaucratic processes. Interventions that can be implemented were the Guardian Scholars Program, the Alabama REACH initiative, and the guidelines provided by the National Council on Disability. Limitations of this study were the variety of situations of the youth, the costs of the interventions and the inherent limitations of a scoping review.
