Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a link between having children and the alcohol and cannabis use of adults. Because of the many (negative) consequences of alcohol and cannabis use, it is important to look into the protective and risk factors of these uses, to be able to invest in effective preventive interventions. Data has been used from the 1970 British Cohort Study, which provided a sample of N = 9,630. The sample consisted of 5,952 people having children (61.8%) (of which 2,434 men (40.9%)) and 3,678 people not having children (38.2%) (of which 2,167 men (58.9%)). The results of this study showed that adults with (non-)biological children drink alcohol less frequently and are less likely to have ever tried cannabis compared to those without (non-)biological children. No significant link was found between parenthood and the frequency of cannabis use. Gender as a covariate has also been confirmed to be associated with all dependent variables: men seemed to use both alcohol and cannabis more often than women and more men seemed to have ever tried cannabis than women. Additionally, the frequencies of alcohol and cannabis use appeared to be positively correlated and cannabis use seemed to moderate the relationship between parenthood and alcohol use. Based on this study, it can be concluded that parenthood may be a protective factor for the frequency of alcohol use and the likelihood of ever trying cannabis, but not for the frequency of cannabis use.
